Stephens Scorches MSA Field at Toledo
By Chris Meyers
Toledo, Ohio- After winning his first feature in a supermodified at the
Oswego Speedway, one could tell that Trent Stephens was going to be a great
supermodified driver. The rookie continued his up and down season with an
impressive performance holding off veteran hot shoes Timmy Jedrzejek and
Charlie Schultz at Toledo Speedway on Friday night. Lagrange, Ohio's Jon
Henes and Sandusky, Ohio's Gene Lee Gibson paced the PPG Vibrance Collection
Super Series to the green flag with Henes out to the early lead. His lead
was short lived as Bobby Dawson would take over the lead on the second lap
from his fourth place starting position. Charlie Schultz and Timmy Jedrzejek
immediately went to work and wasted no time moving up from the fourth row.
At the end of lap four, Jedrzejek was up to the third spot. Schultz would
crack the top five on lap four by motoring around Gibson. Stephens would
flex his muscle and take over the point on lap seven with a daring low move
on Dawson on the rumble strip in turn one. Jedrzejek would pass his
teammate Dawson for second on lap ten. A lap later, Schultz would pass
Dawson for third. Tim Ice would work into the fourth spot getting around
Dawson on lap sixteen.
The only caution of the feature would occur on lap twenty-three when the
rear end broke on Kyle Edwards' machine, sending him for a spin in turns
three and four, ending his night. Stephens had two lapped cars between him
and Jedrzejek with Schultz sitting in third. One of those lapped cars, Jack
Smith pulled into the pit area on the restart ending his night. Schultz and
Jedrzejek were each trying to figure out how to clear Gibson. Jedrzejek was
working the low side while Schultz took the high side. Jedrzejek was able to
clear Gibson first as Schultz cleared him a lap later. As the remaining laps
unfolded, Jedrzejek was unable to mount a challenge on Stephens who took his
second win of the season.
After seeing his teammate Randy Burch suffer a tough hit at the end of his
qualifying lap, Stephens' win made the night a little bit better for the
ACME Racing team. The Ravenna, Ohio rookie did a spectacular job of working
and weaving his way thru lap traffic. "The ACME Racing crew gave me a great
car. I knew I had a great car and just had to get out in front between
Charlie and Timmy did. I got up there and made a daring move on Bobby
(Dawson). I was able to get around him and set sail. Luckily, the lapped
cars held their line. I'd like to thank my sponsors, The Chevy Network, PPG
Vibrance Collection, Prostar Specialties, Delta Computers, Domino's Pizza,
and Speedmeetsart.com. A big thanks to Steve and Rich Stout and the entire
crew. These cars are just awesome. Unfortunately, Randy broke his axle in
hot laps but I think this might have helped out the night a little bit."
Jedrzejek was in the Reed's Salvage number 8 that he drove to a championship
in 2008. Timmy was happy with the second place finish. He explained, "The 19
was awfully strong. We didn't have anything for him. Our guys did a great
job of preparing this car in a couple of days. We had a second place car and
ran strong. I'm real happy with the way the car was tonight. It's in one
piece and in the trailer. We'll go home and get ready for the Classic."
Third place finisher "Chargin" Charlie Schultz was content with third. He
stated, "Trent got out to clean air before we did. Timmy and I had a pretty
good battle going on there. It was just a matter of which one of us could
get around Gene first. I got to the outside of Timmy and even Gene but just
got ran up to the third groove and Timmy got back by. We just played cat and
mouse the rest of the race."
Charlie Schultz and Timmy Jedrzejek won heat races. Jedrzejek and Schultz
were the two fastest qualifiers. The Midwest Supermodified Associations will
take a month off and return to racing action at Oswego Speedway on Friday
September 4th, 2009. For more information on the MSA, check out the website
